Health, Safety, Environment & Quality

The Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) department is responsible for ensuring that all employees and visitors to our company premises are safe and healthy. This includes ensuring that all equipment and machinery is safe to use, and that all work areas are clean and free from potential hazards. The HSE department also carries out regular risk assessments to identify any potential hazards and put in place controls to mitigate these risks.

The aim of the reward and recognition system is also to acknowledge the positive attitude and adherence to the Company’s HSEQ systems.

Scaffolding Manufacturers (Trinidad) Limited (SMTL) has been in existence since 1973 and brings to you over forty years of experience and expertise in the Scaffolding Industry. Our company provides access and support scaffolding services as well as manufacture, rent and sell scaffolding to the Petro – Chemical Industry, Oilfield Refineries, Construction Industry, Offshore Platforms and in General Maintenance Industry. We also supply and install Temporary Grandstand Bleachers and Industrial Shrink Wrapping for which we are the sole distributor in the Caribbean. We are fully committed to the provision of a safe and healthy work environment for all its employees and others who may work, visit or enter our clients’ facilities on our company’s behalf. Therefore, it is our intention to develop and maintain a Health, Safety and Environmental programme which is in line with legal requirements and the best business practices that governs our industry. In furtherance of this policy, the company is committed to:

  • Prevent harm to people, property and environment
  • Identify potential hazards that may arise through the activities of SMTL, to assess the risk arising from these and to institute effective control measures to eliminate or minimize the risk.
  • Provide safe systems of work, safe work conditions and equipment.
  • Implement appropriate measures to prevent incidents and accidents affected by the activities of SMTL and promote a culture of safety consciousness.
  • Report and investigate all incidents and accidents and implement relevant control measures with the intention to prevent reoccurrence.
  • Identify reasonably foreseeable emergency scenarios using our Risk Management System and develop, communicate and implement emergency procedures as per consequence.
  • Provide relevant information, instruction, training and supervision as is necessary to ensure competence of all Employees.
  • Ensure safe handling, storage, transportation and disposal of harmful substances and equipment.
  • Consult with Employees on HSE management and performance.
  • Integrate health and safety responsibilities into everyday working practices and managerial responsibilities and to continually review, improve and update the policy to comply with all relevant legislation, codes of practice and guidance are taken into account, where appropriate.
  • Develop and adopt HSE Standards in relation to the risk associated with our business.
  • Provide the necessary resources for the implementation and management of its health, safety and environmental system.
  • Comply fully with all relevant statutory and contractual Health, Safety and Environmental requirements.
  • Ensure that all Health, Safety and Environmental requirements are communicated, understood and implemented where third party arrangements exist.
  • Monitor, inspect and conduct safety audit to ensure effective management of health and safety throughout SMTL’s operations.
  • Capture and share lesson learnt on all areas of the business.
  • Empower all employees, visitors, sub contractors and other stakeholders to STOP and or refuse all unsafe work.
  • Identify potential hazards that may arise through the activities of SMTL, to assess the risk arising from these and to institute effective control measures to eliminate or minimize the risk.
  • Implement appropriate measures to prevent accidents, injury and health impairment of all persons affected by the activities of SMTL and promote a culture of safety consciousness.
  • Provide the necessary resources for the implementation and management of its health, safety and environmental system.
  • Comply fully with all relevant statutory and contractual Health, Safety and Environmental requirements.
  • Ensure that all Health, Safety and Environmental requirements are communicated, understood and implemented where third party arrangements exist.

Our HESQ Committee

Compliance with the Occupational Safety and Health Act 2004 (amended 2006) requires that any company with twenty five (25) or more employees must have a Health, Safety and Environmental committee. Our HSEQ Committee is an important part of our HSEQ Management effort. Managers, senior supervisors, supervisors and foremen would gain valuable assistance in their areas by a joint effort with their committee members.

  • Keep under review the measures taken to ensure the safety and health of persons at the place of work

  • Investigate any matter at workplace which a member of the committee or a person employed thereat considers is not safe or is a risk to health which has been brought to the employer

  • Attempt to resolve any matter relating to the health and safety of all employees and if it is unable to do so, shall request the chief inspector to undertake an inspection of the workplace for that purpose.

  • Meet monthly

  • Revise membership every 6 months or at least annually

  • Develop short and long term goals

  • Discuss accident prevention methods

  • Review previous accidents and injuries

  • Conduct periodic hse inspections on client’s job sites, offices, warehouse and workshop

  • Recommend changes to hse procedures and policies.

  • Investigate refusal to do unsafe work by employees
